At this year’s WWDC, Apple showed off its new AI called Apple Intelligence. It just launched in beta last week, and I installed the beta on my Mac when it first launched an I have been using it since then. In this article I want to recound my experience with Apple Intelligence so far.

Writing Features

When Apple Intelligence was first announce, the feature I anticipated most was the writing features. I already use ChatGPT to write when I need it, but it’s always inconvenient to have to jump between apps, so I was excited to hear about writing tools being integrated into macOS. The writing tools can be accesed by highlighting text, then selecting the “writing tools” option. You can proofread & rewrite the text, you can make it more friendly, professional or concise, you can also summarize it, create key points, a list, or a table with the text. I’ve already found this feature to be great. I even used it to make the introduction of this article sound friendlier. So overall, this is the best feature in my opinion Apple has delievered in the Apple Intelligence update.

New Siri Features

Included in the beta is Apple’s new Siri. Siri’s logo has also been redesigned for the launch of Apple Intelligence (I honestly like it better). But more importantly, the new updates to Siri bring contextual awareness, better voice recognition, and product knowledge.

Contextual Awareness

In Siri, when you ask back-to-back questions about a topic, Siri will remember what you asked in previous questions to be able to provide accurate information for following question you may ask. Using Siri on macOS 15.1, I’ve already noticed a difference. However, I don’t really use Siri, so I won’t be able to take advantage of these features.

Product Knowledge

Added this week is product knowledge in Siri. Now, Siri has knowledge of Apple products and can provide user tips. You can ask Siri a question on how to do something and Siri will automatically pull an answer from the macOS User Guide. So far, this feature has worked well, but I did have some issues when asking “How can I set up Touch ID?” I honestly really look forward to this feature launching so I don’t have to keep helping elderly relatives with tech :)

This feature doesn't work all of the time.

This feature is great when it does work.

Voice Recognition

Added to Siri in macOS 15.1 is improved voice recognition. So if you stumble over your words or mispronounce somthing, Siri’s AI will be able to determine what you meant to say. As a person who tends to stumble over my words, this feature has already helped me a lot.

Web Page Summaries

Included in Safari in macOS 15.1 beta 1 is a new “summarize” feature in reader mode. At the top of a page in reader mode, a new “summarize” button is displayed. Once this button is clicked it will take a few seconds to generate, and then the summary is displayed on the right side of the page. As a person who really doesn’t like reading, I am excited to use this feature especially while studying. So far, the summarize feature works pretty well and is accurate.

Mail App Improvements

"Priority" Section

The mail app in macOS 15.1 is included with a few new AI features. Although I don’t use Apple’s mail app as my default, I have been considering switching to it for the AI features. When I first opened the new mail app, I noticed this “priority” section. Apple Intelligence will look through your recent messages and pick out what it determines to be important and display it in this section. Although I see this feature being helpful for some people, I have no use for it because all I have in my email is spam and verification codes.

Email Summaries

As in reader mode in Safari, emails can now be summarized. Emails can be summarized by clicking a “summarize” button in the top right of the email body. It will take a few seconds to load the summary, then it will show at the top of the email. In the few emails I tried this feature on, I found it to be an effective, helpful feature that I am excited to use in the future.

Will I use Apple Intelligence?

As an iPad 8th gen owner, iPhone 15 user, and M1 MacBook Air user, I’ll be limited to macOS’s AI features. I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve tried, but I only see myself using half of them due to my limited app usage. The new intelligence features are comparable to ChatGPT and other AI services, but the system integration makes them more useful. It’s unfortunate that Apple Intelligence is limited to the newest devices.

Overall, new innovative features on Apple Intelligence for macOS have really improved user experience and productivity. Among them, one outstanding characteristic is how handy it has become with the integrated writing tools and improved Siri capabilities. However, the full realization of those features is only applicable to the newest Apple devices. My experience has been great, but I can use part of the features since I am using a limited number of apps. While this is the case, Apple Intelligence still fills an important gap in AI integration for macOS. I look forward to seeing how it evolves and improves in the future.
